RMA Digital Preservation Program and Covid-19 Web Collection

What is Digital Preservation?

Digital preservation encompasses all necessary processes that ensure the long-term accessibility of digital records as well as surrogates produced to preserve analog records. The complex nature of digital records dictates several differences between the preservation of digital and analog materials.

What is a Digital Record?

The Society of American Archivists defines a Digital Record [Electronic Record] as, “Data or information that has been captured and fixed for storage and manipulation in an automated system and that requires the use of the system to render it intelligible by a person.” In the context of RMA, this capture also includes the preservation and accessibility of related metadata.

With the ever-increasing volume and technical complexity of digital records, Concordia University Records Management and Archives (RMA) has implemented a Digital Archives Preservation Strategy (DAPS) in response to preservation and management challenges related to digital records.

The vital role of archives cannot be underestimated in these unprecedented times. Institutions, governments, international organizations, businesses and corporations rely on archivists and records managers to provide trustworthy preservation and access to critical information. Concordia Records Management and Archives is committed to these provisions for the internal and external community through several ititiatives.

Records Management and Archives is documenting Concordia-related Covid-19 news and events

As of April, 2020, RMA has been crawling Concordia COVID-19 web content to document the current pandemic. The evolving web collection contains publicly available news on the Concordia website, social media posts by student associations, faculty and researchers, and student newspaper articles on the outbreak.

Please contact us at archives@concordia.ca with links to Concordia-related sites that fit into the COVID-19 web collection and we will add them!

The Covid-19 web collection is part of the RMA Digital Preservation Strategy (DPS)

The Covid-19 collection is one of several responses from RMA that meet the challenge of preserving and managing the ever-increasing volume and technical complexity of digital records. The DPS reinforces RMA’s commitment to collecting, preserving and making digital holdings accessible for future researchers. Read More about Digital Preservation.
