About Boxes and Bitstreams

Archival materials are used now more than ever in mainstream media, but we rarely hear about the human experience linked to archives, what happens behind the scene. What is it that we actually do? With Boxes and Bitstreams, we want to shed some light on a profession we love: how archivists work to sort, organize, preserve, and make archives available to our research community and the wider public. We want to talk about our donors, records creators, collaborators, and colleagues.
You might have encountered Records Management and Archives’ social media accounts or our YouTube channel. Our online footprint is well documented. However, Boxes and Bitstreams aims to create a space that will help us discuss more thoroughly the experience of being an Archivist or a Records Manager, on a more personal level.
When visiting our vault, people will often comment on the hint of vanilla scent that’s present in the air: that’s bibliosmia, or the smell of aging paper. This is the kind of awareness we want to transmit to Boxes and Bitstreams readers: a part of the daily experience linked to working with archival materials.

Looking for news about our recent acquisitions (private and institutional), special projects, cool findings and challenges faced during the processing of archival materials? Boxes and Bitstreams is the place! We will of course highlight successes, but we will also share some of our failures: after all, working with boxes of archival materials and bitstreams of data is a constant learning experience.
