Honorary degree citation - Zubin Mehta

By: Jack Bordan, November 1965

Mr. Chancellor:

I have the honour to present to you Zubin Mehta, distinguished conductor of The Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Mehta was appointed music director and resident conductor of the Orchestra after his eminently successful first concerts in October 1960 as a guest conductor. He came to us with an impressive musical background, following his studies in Vienna, a city to which he regularly returns and where he is always greeted with enthusiasm. Under his direction, The Montreal Symphony Orchestra has established new standards of performance both in Montreal and abroad. Mr. Mehta's musical ability and indeed his enthusiasm and energy are recognized by his concurrent position as the musical director of The Los Angelos Philharmonic Orchestra and by a growing list of guest engagements all over the world. We, in Montreal, continue to watch, listen and applaud with pleasure, as he leads our Orchestra toward the ranks of the world's greatest. He has earned the respect and praise of his musicians and his audience alike.

In honouring Mr. Mehta, we recognize his outstanding contribution to the cultural life of our city and we salute The Montreal Symphony Orchestra, which he so ably directs.

Mr. Chancellor, I am privileged to present Zubin Mehta on behalf of the University Council and by authority of the Board of Governors that you may confer on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
