Mr. Chancellor, it is my honour to present to you Madame Monique Leroux, Chair of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer of Desjardins Group.
Leader dynamique dans le secteur financier non seulement québécois mais aussi canadien, Monique Leroux fait figure de pionnière à plus d’un titre. Ainsi, elle a été la première femme à présider l’Ordre des comptables agréés du Québec. La première également à occuper le poste de vice-présidente aux finances d’une grande banque canadienne. La première encore à assurer la présidence du Mouvement des caisses Desjardins. Outre ces importants précédents, cette Montréalaise de naissance est également renommée pour son remarquable esprit d’entreprise, son sens inné de l’innovation financière et son engagement profond envers la communauté. Riche d’audace, elle a souvent été choisie femme d’affaires ou personnalité de l’année. Bref, Monique Leroux est un être d’exception.
In her capacity as Desjardins’ CEO she also chairs the Boards of Directors of the Caisse centrale Desjardins, Desjardins Trust and Desjardins Venture Capital, in addition to presiding over the Desjardins Group Management Committee. Prior to her election as President, Ms. Leroux was Chief Financial Officer of Desjardins Group, including responsibility for the establishment of the overall financial framework of the Group and its components. She has also previously served as President of Desjardins Financial Corporation and Chief Executive Officer of its subsidiaries, namely Desjardins Financial Security, Desjardins General Insurance Group, Desjardins Trust, and Desjardins Asset Management.
Avant de se joindre au Mouvement Desjardins en 2001, Mme Leroux était première vice‑présidente exécutive et chef de l’exploitation à Quebecor. À la Banque Royale du Canada, elle a occupé le poste de première vice‑présidente, Direction du Québec, et celui de première vice‑présidente aux finances du groupe financier. En outre, elle a été associée du cabinet comptable international Ernst & Young, où elle a assuré diverses responsabilités d’envergure.
Her expertise and accomplishments in the areas of management, leadership, accounting and governance have been widely acknowledged and celebrated widely. Named one of 25 Transformational Canadians by the Globe and Mail, CTV and La Presse, she serves as a model for budding finance sector leaders who want to not only excel but shape anew traditional domains such as the banking industry. Her awards and distinctions are numerous – they include the Prix Réalisations by the Réseau des femmes d’affaires du Québec, Business Woman of the Year 2008 by the Consumers’ Choice Institute, Personnalité de l’année 2008 by Les Affaires, 2007 Female CFO of the Year by CFO Canada, one of the top 25 financial personalities in Québec by Finance et Investissement and one of the 2011 honorees of the Public Policy Forum. Her many awards pay tribute to her fierce commitment to social and community engagement, in the fields of education, the arts, amateur sport and her profession. Later this year she will receive the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship from the Canadian Institute of the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars. Leroux’s career to date has exemplified Woodrow Wilson’s words on achievement – “You are here to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, and with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world.”
A graduate of the Université du Quebec à Chicoutimi, the Conservatoire de musique du Quebec (yes, she is also a pianist), and the University of Western Ontario Executive Program, Leroux is also a Certified Management Accountant, and a chartered accountant. Recipient of numerous financial sector, business leadership, music and public media awards, Monique Leroux continues to distinguish herself as Quebec and Canada’s leadership model in the financial and business sector.
