Genome Foundry expansion
Renovations included the construction of a new containment level 1 laboratory, the installation of new fermentation equipment and upgrades to two existing microfluidics labs.
Overview
The Genome Foundry (GE), as well as the Bioprocessing Lab in the Applied Science Hub, underwent renovations that introduced cutting-edge capabilities and enhanced core functions to dramatically speed up research. These upgrades significantly increased research capacity to meet growing academic and commercial demand.
Timeline
- Fall 2024 to summer 2025
- Completed: September 2025
Project goal
Researchers in the field of biomanufacturing technologies at the Centre for Applied Synthetic Biology benefited from newly renovated spaces that accommodated advanced equipment.
The specialized infrastructure and equipment installed as part of the expansion fostered new collaborations both within and outside Concordia. It also enabled the university to better leverage the potential of both established researchers and new hires. The new GE-S120 lab offered greater flexibility for future equipment acquisitions.
Renovations
- The project constructed a containment level 1 laboratory in what had been an open office area of the Genome Foundry.
- Equipment from GE-S126 was relocated to the new GE-S120 lab space.
- The new lab space was designed with a large open area for custom equipment and assemblies, plus extra bench space for non-integrated instruments.
- The renovation installed new fermentation equipment in the Bioprocessing Centre.
- Additional equipment was added to two microfluidics labs on Concordia's Sir George Williams and Loyola campuses.
