FG Building basement classrooms renovation

Concordia is transforming the three basement levels of the Faubourg Ste-Catherine (FG) Building into modern, accessible and flexible spaces designed to support today’s teaching and learning needs.

The project will create new classrooms, study areas and shared spaces, while improving how students, faculty and staff move through and experience the building. It will also address long-standing infrastructure issues to ensure the spaces remain functional and resilient for years to come.

About

The FG basement classrooms renovation project will modernize three levels of the building to better support teaching, learning and student life.

New classrooms will accommodate a range of teaching styles, from collaborative group work to lecture-based instruction, while informal spaces will support study and interaction outside the classroom. The project will also improve circulation between spaces and strengthen connections to the rest of the building.

Improved access and infrastructure

A key objective of the renovation is to make the basement levels more accessible and welcoming.

The project will improve vertical access and remove barriers to movement, while also addressing existing challenges such as limited visibility, hidden corners and shared circulation with commercial tenants.

In addition, the project will resolve important infrastructure issues by upgrading building systems and mitigating water infiltration from both the foundations and spaces above. These improvements will support the long-term performance and reliability of the basements.

Project timeline

  • Start of construction: summer 2026
  • Projected completion: summer 2028

Impacts during construction

Construction will take place in an active, occupied building. While efforts will be made to reduce impacts, some disruption is expected.

This may include:

  • Temporary changes to access routes and circulation
  • Occasional service interruptions
  • Impacts to shared spaces and nearby buildings, including the Grey Nuns Annex (GA) and Faubourg (FB) Building
  • Construction-related noise, dust and activity

Clear signage and regular updates will be provided to help users navigate the building safely and stay informed throughout the project.
