Escalator and elevator maintenance
Escalators and elevators at Concordia are regularly maintained to ensure they remain safe, reliable and compliant with provincial safety regulations.
During these periods, this equipment is not safe for use. Walking on or tampering with an escalator under maintenance, or attempting to use an elevator that is out of service, not only puts your safety at risk — it can also damage sensitive equipment, delay maintenance and compromise future operation.
Maintenance and service updates
Escalators and elevators on campus undergo routine monthly maintenance during which each unit is typically taken out of service for a few hours.
Most service calls are resolved within a short timeframe. Extended outages are less common and usually occur when more complex repairs are required.
During the summer, a preventive maintenance program is carried out for escalators. As part of this work, escalators are taken out of service one at a time for approximately two days each until all units have been serviced.
Elevators also undergo an annual preventive maintenance cycle, typically completed in January, during which each unit may be out of service for half a day to a full day.
What to expect during maintenance periods
- Signage and barricades will clearly indicate when equipment is out of service.
- Technicians may be on-site performing testing, calibration or component replacement.
- Maintenance periods may be brief or extended, depending on the issue and required parts.
How you can help
- Do not use escalators or elevators that are barricaded or marked out of service.
- Use alternate routes (stairs, elevators or escalators) as indicated.
