Career questions with Mary
What do you love most about your work, and what inspired you to pursue this career in the first place?
I got lured into my first ever subtitling job by the allure of working on well-known movies produced and distributed by a well-known streaming service. I learned most of what I know about localization from this role and I've applied and developed my knowledge in video games since. Looking at my inbox today and seeing dragons, mages and plasma guns became the magic and wonder I sought from choosing my program at university.
Looking back, what skills have been the biggest gamechangers in your career?
I would say the resourcefulness I developed during my academic years remains the biggest asset I carry into my everyday work. The problem-solving skills are essential to providing my clients the high-quality work they deserve.
How did Concordia prepare you for your career?
The demands of each class, including attention to detail and adhering to deadlines, baked a certain work ethic in me.
What is a standout memory from your time at Concordia?
My strongest memories will always be film classes with John Locke. He imparted curiosity to delve deeper into the different aspects of films that make them impactful and, more importantly, to enjoy the experience alongside an academic approach.
If you could give your younger self one powerful piece of advice, what would it be?
Stay curious and welcome the adventure in any way it might present itself.
What’s the most exciting shift happening in your industry right now?
Definitely the use of AI, and new understandings of how to bridge the gap between worthy creative output versus soulless commercial products.
