Available fit testing
Concordia’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team offers both qualitative and quantitative respirator fit testing to individuals and organizations outside the university. These services ensure respirators provide effective protection and meet applicable Quebec and Canadian safety standards.
What is a fit test?
A fit test checks whether a respirator forms a proper seal on the wearer’s face. This seal is critical for protection against airborne contaminants. We offer two types of testing: qualitative and quantitative.
Qualitative fit test
A pass/fail method using a test agent (e.g. saccharin or Bitrex) that can be tasted or smelled if the seal isn’t effective. Commonly used for N95s and other filtering facepiece respirators.
Quantitative fit test
A precision method using a TSI PortaCountTM device to measure leakage and provide a numerical fit factor. Often required in higher-risk workplaces for half- or full-facepiece respirators.
Supported respirator models
Quantitative fit testing is available for the following makes and models:
- 3M 6000, 6500, 7500, HF-800SD series (half-mask or full-facepiece)
- Dentec 100 series (half-mask)
- Honeywell North RU8800 (half-mask)
- All N95 disposable filtering facepiece respirators
Testing for other models may be possible. Contact ehs@concordia.ca in advance to confirm.
What to expect
Each appointment includes:
- A 30-minute in-person fit test (per respirator)
- Official documentation valid for two years
- The option to purchase a respirator on-site (additional fee)
Pricing
- Qualitative fit test: $75 + tax
- Quantitative fit test: $125 + tax
Group rates available for 10 or more individuals. Payment by credit card or invoice.
To book, contact ehs@concordia.ca.
To ensure accurate results:
- Avoid eating, drinking (except water), chewing gum or smoking 30 minutes before testing
- Arrive clean-shaven — no facial hair where the respirator seals
- Remove facial piercings or bulky jewelry that could affect the fit
- Reschedule if experiencing symptoms of illness (no fee)
Participants who are unshaven or visibly unwell will not be tested and may still be charged.
If already owned:
- Bring the respirator and a compatible pair of P100 filters
If not yet owned:
- EHS can provide fit testing for the supported models listed above (subject to availability)
- For specific N95 models required by an employer, bring an unopened box of that model
EHS does not provide medical evaluations.
It the participant’s responsibility to ensure medical clearance, where required by occupational health and safety regulations.
Where no EHS risk assessment has been conducted, Concordia assumes no responsibility for respirator type or filter cartridge selection.
