Vanier Library and Vanier Extension fresh air unit replacement
Upgrades will improve indoor environmental quality and enhance energy efficiency.
Project overview
Concordia is replacing the air handling unit that serves the Vanier Library (VL) Building and the Vanier Extension (VE) to restore full ventilation, heating, cooling and humidification capacity. The existing unit has reached the end of its useful life.
Timeline
- Spring to fall 2026
Project goals
This project will fully restore and modernize the ventilation capacity for the VE and the VL Building by replacing the existing air handling unit. The upgraded system will improve indoor environmental quality and ensure compliance with current ventilation and air-quality standards.
The project also aims to enhance energy efficiency by reactivating and upgrading the existing heat-recovery network, improving operating reliability through new high-efficiency chillers and ensuring that ventilation and cooling remain uninterrupted during maintenance or equipment issues.
Additional goals include:
- Integrating a remote monitoring and control platform
- Improving system supervision
- Supporting more effective energy management through proactive maintenance
Impacts during the renovation
The VE and the VL Building will remain open and operational throughout the project. Construction activities will be coordinated to minimize disruption to building users.
Temporary or partial ventilation arrangements will be implemented to maintain fresh-air supply and thermal comfort while the air handling unit is being replaced. Mechanical, electrical and control system connections may require brief service interruptions. These will be scheduled in advance and timed to avoid peak heating or cooling periods.
Occasional activity near the project area may be noticeable as equipment is moved in and out, but all hallways and access routes will remain open and safe to use.
