Catherine Cabot

Throughout my career, I have led major aircraft modernization initiatives, managed first and second line maintenance teams, and overseen software, systems integration and ground support equipment programs. I have also deployed on NATO missions to Afghanistan and Romania. I have also held high-profile strategic-level support roles as Senior Aide de Camp to the Governor General of Canada and Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of the Defence Staff.

In addition to my BEng in software engineering from Concordia, I have a Master of Public Administration from the Royal Military College of Canada and a Doctorate of Business Administration in project management from l'Université du Québec en Outaouais.

What do you love most about your work, and what inspired you to pursue this career in the first place? 

What I value most about my work is the once-in-a-lifetime opportunities it has given me, experiences I would not have had with any other employer. I have worked closely with partner nations overseas, contributed meaningfully to helping others, and served in unique roles, including as Senior Aide-de-Camp to the Governor General of Canada. My decision to pursue this career was inspired by my father, who also served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. 

Looking back, what skills have been the biggest game-changers in your career? 

Looking back, the most impactful skill I have developed over the years has been confidence in myself and in the value I bring. As a woman in a largely male-dominated military environment, recognizing and trusting my abilities has been essential. That confidence has allowed me to contribute unique perspectives and make a meaningful impact within the organization. 

How did Concordia prepare you for your career? 

Four years in Concordia's Software Engineering program was not always easy, but it was deeply rewarding. The experience prepared me for the real world by developing a strong work ethic, the discipline to push through the hard things and the resilience to overcome setbacks.

What is a standout memory from your time at Concordia? 

A standout memory from my time at Concordia was being part of its incredibly supportive and close-knit engineering community. Through that community, I formed friendships that have lasted well beyond graduation and continue to be an important part of my life today. 

If you could give your younger self one powerful piece of advice, what would it be? 

I would tell my younger self to enjoy the ride! Life is not ever about reaching a destination or an end state. It's about appreciating all the little things throughout the journey. 

What’s the most exciting shift happening in your industry right now? 

One of the most significant shifts in the industry is how rapidly global security challenges are changing and shaping defence priorities. Canada’s renewed commitment to defence spending has accelerated a number of major procurement programs. In particular, the development and acquisition of new air force capabilities.
