Aya El-Baba

BComm Human Resource Management 21
Works as a campus recruiter for technology roles

I started at university studying philosophy, not entirely sure what I wanted to do. A management course that I took as an elective piqued my interest in human resources. With the help of Concordia’s tutoring and the Student Success Centre, I was able to successfully complete the math and economics courses required to switch to a BComm in Human Resources.

Career questions with Aya

What do you love most about your work, and what inspired you to pursue this career in the first place?

As a campus recruiter, I love bridging the gap between great opportunities and students. I remember being a student and going through the process of finding an internship or an entry-level job, and I love that I can help students navigate that, while also bringing future leaders into the company.

Looking back, what skills have been the biggest gamechangers in your career?

Being able to convey your ideas and explanations in a clear and professional manner goes a long way. Employers will train you on their process and their ways. However, your basic skills are up to you to develop.

How did Concordia prepare you for your career?

Concordia’s professors often have long careers in their field. Their lived experiences and stories add an important layer to the courses. They are not only great teachers, but also great mentors. Concordia’s Student Success Centre also offers great services to support students throughout all stages of their job search and career.

Some of my best memories from university were at events that I worked at or attended at Concordia. I learned a lot and made many connections.

If you could give your younger self one powerful piece of advice, what would it be?

I would tell myself to say “yes” more often to things that I was interested in but found intimidating, like trying out for case competitions or going on an exchange program.

What’s the most exciting shift happening in your industry right now?

As technology is rapidly developing, so are the needs of the organizations and the expectations of candidates. I am excited for all the new tools and new skills that we will be unlocking moving forward.
