Mr. Chancellor, I have the honour to present to you Roland Doré, eminent educator, researcher and administrator.
Dr. Doré obtained his engineering degree in 1960 from l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. In 1965, he completed a Master's of Science at Stanford University followed in 1969 by a Ph.D. For over thirty years, he maintained a close affiliation with l'École Polytechnique holding a variety of professorial and administrative positions. In 1980, he became its Director of Research and in 1982, its chief executive officer, a position he held until 1989 when he was named Chairman of its Board. In 1992, he was appointed by the Prime Minister as the founding President of the Canadian Space Agency, a post he held until 1994 when he took up his current position as President of the International Space University in Strasbourg.
C'est à l'époque où Roland était directeur de l'École Polytechnique que j'ai eu le plaisir de le connaître et d'apprécier ses qualités de leader ainsi que son entregent. Nous avons travaillé de nombreuses années comme membres du comité des doyens d'ingénierie du Québec.
Je me souviens qu'un des dossiers les plus névralgiques que nous avons eu à traiter concernait la proposition du gouvernement du Québec visant une réduction importante de la durée des programmes d'ingénierie, geste qui aurait affecté la qualité de nos programmes au point qu'ils n'auraient plus été compatibles avec ceux du reste du Canada.
Roland fut l'un de nos collaborateurs lors de la création en 1983, du Centre informatique de Montréal, le CRIM, et en 1985, lorsque nous avons reformulé le mandat du CRIM pour en faire le carrefour des industriels et des universitaires oeuvrant dans le domaine de l'informatique.
Je profite de cette occasion pour le remercier de son appui, de son encouragement et de ses interventions stratégiques.
Dr. Doré's energy and commitment have earned him the presidency or chairmanship of several of Canada's leading academic and professional organizations, including the Advisory Committee of the Industrial Materials Research Institute of the National Research Council of Canada as well as the National Committee of Deans of Engineering and Applied Science. In addition, from 1988 to 1992 he was Vice-President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
En 1993, M. Roland Doré se voit octroyer le Grand prix d'excellence de l'Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec. En 1992, il reçoit la Médaille Julian C. Smith de l'Institut canadien de génie mécanique et est fait Officier de l'Ordre du Canada. Il est titulaire de doctorats honorifiques de l'Université McGill et du Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean.
Mr. Chancellor, it is my privilege and a personal pleasure to present to you on the behalf of Senate and by the Authority of the Board of Governors, Roland Doré so that you may confer on him the Degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
