Honorary degree citation - Mildred B. Lande*

By: Linda M. Dyer, June 1993

Mr. Rector, I have the honour to present to you Mildred Lande, community leader, administrator, philanthropist and patron of the arts. Mrs. Lande has won great esteem for her decades of service and achievement in Montréal, Québec and Canadian society.

She has been active in the Canadian National Ballet, the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, the Royal Ballet of England, the Montréal Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and other arts organizations. In the health sector, Mrs. Lande was the first woman to become a member of the Board of Trustees of the Jewish General Hospital; she is now honourary vice-president of this hospital. Noteworthy contributions to the work of the Red Cross, the International Alliance of Hospital Volunteers and the Québec Health Campaign - all these provide further evidence of Mrs. Lande's tireless dedication to our community.

Mildred Lande is currently Honourary President of the Shaar Hashomayim Congregation, and also presides over the Women's Auxiliary of the Jewish General Hospital and the Jewish Community Foundation. Mrs. Lande's presidency marks the first time that a woman has occupied both these presidencies in the 140 year history of the two organizations.

Mr. Rector, it is an honour and a privilege for me to present to you, on behalf of the Senate and by authority of the Board of Governors, Mildred Lande, that you may confer on her the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
