Mr. Chancellor, I have the honour to present to you François-Marc Gagnon of the Université de Montréal, one of Canada's most respected and prolific art historians. For more than a quarter century he has been a central figure in Canadian visual art in general, and in the history of Canadian art in particular.
Le professeur Gagnon a joué un rôle capital dans la formation des artistes et des historiens de l'art canadiens. Sa rigueur intellectuelle et son enthousiasme communicatif pour la matière qu'il enseigne ont inspiré un nombre incalculable de collègues et d'étudiants, tant de langue française qu'anglaise. Même s'il a passé la majeure partie de sa longue carrière à l'Université de Montréal, d'autres départements d'histoire de l'art ont pu bénéficier de son incontestable compétence, notamment le Département d'histoire de l'art de l'Université Concordia.
In the field of Canadian art history, Dr. Gagnon has authored, co-authored or contributed to more than two dozen books and exhibition catalogues, and has produced dozens more seminal and authoritative articles for scholarly journals. His published work has ranged from analyses of European depictions of members of the First Nations, to studies of twentieth century painting on Québec artist Paul-Émile Borduas. His definitive 1978 book, Paul-Émile Borduas: biographie critique et analyse de l'oeuvre, won a Governor General's award and set a standard against which all subsequent Canadian art historical texts must be measured.
Le professeur Gagnon s'est toujours fait un point d'honneur de ne pas limiter son rayonnement aux seuls professionnels de l'histoire de l'art ou aux futurs spécialistes du domaine. Dans ses nombreuses activités de conservateur, de conférencier, d'intervieweur à la radio et à la télévision, d'écrivain et d'animateur de deux séries télévisuelles sur la peinture moderne au Québec et à l'étranger, il a toujours cherché à intéresser le grand public aux arts visuels. Il ne fait pas de doute que nous lui devons largement l'intérêt que connaît aujourd'hui l'art canadien tant chez les spécialistes du domaine que de la part du grand public.
Dr. Gagnon has also been very generous in contributing his expertise and enthusiasm to the boards, committees and juries that constitute the institutional support structure of the Canadian visual arts community. He has given of his time and experience to the National Gallery of Canada, the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, the Canada Council, the Ministère de l'Éducation du Québec, The Journal of Canadian Art History and a number of other institutions, organizations and publications. Here at Concordia he contributed to the establishment of the Faculty of Fine Arts.
