Mr. Chancellor, I have the honour to present to you Serge Godin, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of CGI, a leader in the field of information technology.
Serge Godin was just a teenager growing up in Quebec's Saguenay region in the late 1960s, when the potential of computers caught his attention. Even in those early days, he knew they would revolutionize the world.
When he founded CGI in June 1976, Serge Godin dreamt of making his little firm of computer consultants an "institution ". He invested $5,000 and turned his basement into an office. That first year, the company generated $138,000 in sales. 24 years later, the billion-dollar mark is far behind him.
He enrolled in the MBA program at Université Laval and, at the age of 26, he used his expertise to launch CGI Inc., a computer consulting and management company in Quebec City. What began as a two-person operation has grown into Canada's largest independent information technology consulting company and the fifth largest in North America.
Along the way, Serge Godin, who knew how to build and motivate a team, built one he could trust and which concentrated on out-sourcing, consulting and systems integration, offering services to five sectors in particular: financial services, telecommunications, government, manufacturing and utilities.
Homme de vision et ce n'est pas un cliché de le dire, Serge Godin et son équipe ont totalement transformé l'entreprise de services-conseils en informatique en un leader nord-américain des technologies de l'information. Ce changement de cap se reflète dans le bond prestigieux qu'a enregistré la capitalisation boursière de CGI au cours des dernières années.
La capitalisation boursière du Groupe CGI dont Serge Godin est président, s'élevait en 1995 à environ 14 millions de dollars. Elle est maintenant supérieure à 4 milliards de dollars cinq ans plus tard.
Décidément le chiffre cinq est vraiment son chiffre chanceux, selon Serge Godin, cinq principes de base constituent le secret du succès de l'entreprise un seul client à la fois, rester cohérent entre ce que l'on dit et ce que l'on fait, respecter les promesses, rester indépendant des fournisseurs, travailler en équipe.
Miser sur la satisfaction du client est un bon investissement et rentable dans le cas de CGI. Ses clients le lui rendent bien puisque le taux de succès des mandats s'établit à 100 % lors des évaluations.
Un autre élément qui figure au tableau d'excellence de Serge Godin: rendre ses clients et ses employés heureux. Comme il le dit lui-même," notre actif prend l'ascenseur le matin et le soir ". Une fois qu'une équipe de travail a atteint les objectifs fixés, elle partage les bénéfices supplémentaires avec l'entreprise. D'autre part, les employés bénéficient de leurs propres succès puisqu'ils peuvent acheter des actions à moitié prix, la firme défrayant l'autre 50% du prix d'achat.
Résultat, au sein de la société que dirige Serge Godin, le taux de rotation de son personnel est trois fois moins élevé que celui du secteur.
Serge Godin peut affirmer avoir réussi son pari de transformer une petite entreprise de sous-sol en une société qui compte maintenant 10 000 professionnels, 40 bureaux au Canada et aux Etats-Unis et est présente dans 23 autres pays à travers le monde.
Throughout his career, Serge Godin has remained very involved in various endeavors that further the economic development of metropolitan Montreal, Quebec and Canada. He was President of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal and he sits on the Board of Directors of the Societé générale de financement. He is a member of the Business Council on National Issues. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Management Consultants and is also actively involved with several charitable organizations. In 1996, Mr. Godin received a special distinction from the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, in recognition of his lifetime professional and business achievements as well as his personal involvement in social issues.
