Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Get credit for what you already know

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a way for students to receive course credit for knowledge, skills and competencies they gained outside of a classroom — for example, through professional experience, workplace training, certifications, or self-directed learning. RPL focuses specifically on non-formal and informal learning and sits within Concordia’s broader framework for recognition of acquired competencies (RAC).

Why consider applying for RPL?

  • Save time – RPL can reduce the number of courses you need to finish your program.
  • Get formal recognition for professional and life experience.

Eligibility and regulations

  • You must be a current student in a Concordia degree or certificate program.
  • RPL applications are only accepted for programs that offer RPL evaluation.
  • Typically, applicants will have 3–5 years of relevant experience acquired prior to starting the program; departments may set other criteria.

What RPL can and can't be used for

  • Can: Be awarded for courses that count toward your program concentration (majors, minors, specializations, honours or certificates). Credit is granted only when a department confirms your competencies match the course learning outcomes.
  • Cannot: Be used for out-of-program electives or to satisfy Concordia’s general education requirement.

Maximum credits and grades

RPL credit will be awarded in accordance with Concordia’s residence requirements. Make sure you understand the minimum number of credits that must be completed in your program at Concordia. RPL credits count toward your program total, but do not carry a grade.

Notes

  • Students in microprograms, the Indigenous Bridging Program, independent students, visiting students and exchange students are not eligible for RPL
  • If you change your concentration or transfer programs, previously awarded RPL credits may no longer apply

Application process

  1. Check eligibility. Verify that that you meet the basic requirements.
  2. Identify the courses that you want RPL credits for. Check the Undergraduate or Graduate calendar to see which courses your experience matches.
  3. Prepare your application. All applicants need to submit a CV, letter of intent, and letters of recommendation or support from their prior experiences.
  4. Submit your application and supporting documentation and pay the application processing fee.
  5. Await evaluation - RPL assessments normally take 8–10 weeks, though timelines may vary depending on the dossier and department. The department may request a challenge exam or other assessment (portfolio, interview, work sample) to verify competence.

Note: The RPL application will open in March of 2026.

Cost

  • RPL application & processing fee: $300
  • If credits are granted, a per-credit fee will be billed at the current tuition base rate paid by the student. Rates vary depending on residency status. See undergraduate and graduate tuition details.
