Roda Siad
Postdoctoral Researcher
Roda Siad is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Research on Migration and Society (IRMS) and a research affiliate with Bridging Divides: Migrant Integration in the Mid-21st Century. At IRMS, she conducts research on intermediaries and the digital transformation of immigration governance. Her research interests broadly focus on the social and political implications of digital technologies and data in humanitarian and migration contexts, including questions of governance, inequality, digital rights and ethics. As a qualitative researcher, she works across several interdisciplinary fields, including science and technology studies (STS), critical data studies, critical humanitarianism and migration studies.
She recently completed her PhD in Communication Studies at McGill University, where her dissertation was a multi-sited ethnographic study examining how digital technologies and data-driven practices used in camps and settlements reshape refugee protection and governance in Kenya and Uganda. Her research was supported through multiple fellowships and awards, including from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Société et culture and the International Development Research Centre.
Before graduate studies, she worked for over five years in Calgary’s settlement sector, supporting newly arrived immigrant and refugee families. Since moving to Montreal, she has volunteered with community-based organizations, including as a board member of the Refugee Centre.
