Works in the clinical research sector

Concordia is well known for its Co-op program, career services, applied research and hands-on learning, but what really made a difference for me in terms of preparing for the real world was the diversity of the student population.

Career questions with Vatche

What do you love most about your work, and what inspired you to pursue this career in the first place?

In the field of clinical research, your efforts contribute to the advancement of crucial knowledge towards breakthrough therapies, new diagnostic tools and even cures for patients who need it the most. Nowhere in the world can we find a perfect healthcare system, but clinical trials provide an alternative care option that makes sense for many patients who would otherwise be left behind within a broken system.

I was lucky enough to have several family members working in various drug development functions during my learning years at Concordia, and they taught me an alternative path which could lead to a rewarding career. I jumped at the first opportunity that was presented, and I’ve never looked back.

Looking back, what skills have been the biggest gamechangers in your career?

Two skills in particular come to mind; analytical thinking and active listening.  Concordia’s programs and professors definitely taught me the former very well, and my friends/classmates taught me the latter. Both these skills go hand-in-hand and are essential in every type of career path.

How did Concordia prepare you for your career?

Concordia is well known for its Co-op program, career services, applied research and hands-on learning, but what really made a difference for me in terms of preparing for the real world was the diversity of the student population, exposing me to people and cultures from all around the world. This helped me work in diverse teams and navigate various cultural contexts.

This exposure is increasingly important in today’s globalized job market, where cross-cultural communication and collaboration are often key to success.

What is a standout memory from your time at Concordia?

At the time, all my courses were located at the Sir George William Campus, so just the fact that I was able to hang out five days a week in the downtown core and chill with friends was a treat for this West Island boy!

If you could give your younger self one powerful piece of advice, what would it be?

Don’t be afraid of change and take as many calculated risks as possible when you’re young. As you grow older and your personal and professional environment evolves, your risk threshold diminishes (usually rightfully so) and you can find more time and more ways to enjoy the finer things in life.

What’s the most exciting shift happening in your industry right now?

As with many different industries, the adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning is being quickly adopted in the healthcare sector, and particularly in clinical research. As we move forward, year upon year, the cost of conducting clinical studies continues to increase, so we’re constantly looking for innovative ways to minimize risks and work more efficiently, while maintaining a high level of safety and data quality
