Marie Claire Forté

Marie Claire Forté is compelled by the relational, experimental and joyous potential of dance. Friendship is one of her artistic bents. Based in Montréal/Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang, she dances, choreographs, translates, writes, teaches and supports. Her child, born in 2018, is a clarifying force. Her career has been nourished by long-term collaborations with artists from different generations and aesthetics, sharing a love of process, rigour and exploration. Important influences include Peter Boneham, artistic director and master teacher of the now-defunct Le Groupe Dance Lab in Ottawa; Toronto-based choreographer Ame Henderson; Gatineau-based visual artist Sophie Bélair Clément; Montréal-based choreographer Louise Bédard and multidisciplinary performance group PME-ART. She creates art—in choreography, language, video and sound—and works with artists she loves, recently Catherine Lalonde, PME-ART and Priscilla Guy. She is a member of La Pieuvre, a supple, Montréal-based group currently working on We Dream Better Together : Dance for 100 years, an 18-person 2-year project to dream of a 100-year plan for dance. Beyond her dance practice, she works in different capacities in the arts: teacher, editor, translator, writer, outside eye or artistic support, post-performance talk host, and conversation facilitator. She is currently working on a book with Peter Boneham on his teaching practice.
