International Excellence Award

After earning his master’s degree in Computer and Information Engineering from Concordia University in 2001, Hong Deng returned to China in 2002 and founded his first company. He led a research and development team in wireless sensor networks (WSN), solving key industrial challenges.

In 2007, he established a heritage conservation business, Microwise System Co., Ltd., based in Xi’an, China, which pioneered WSN applications in cultural heritage preservation — a largely unexplored field in China at the time.

Through his leadership, Microwise System has advanced the use of wireless sensor networks to track environmental conditions that can affect delicate artifacts, including changes in temperature, humidity and light exposure. His work enables real-time analysis of how these factors influence the preservation of cultural objects, helping institutions prevent deterioration before it occurs.

Under his direction, the company has implemented monitoring systems in more than 100 museums across China, as well as in countries in Central Asia such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Among the most prominent sites under his care is the Terracotta Army in Xi’an, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Deng remains dedicated to cultural heritage protection in China and Central Asia.

He received the Concordia University Alumni Association’s International Excellence Award in 2026.
