Basem is Senior Director of Journalistic Standards and Public Trust at CBC News. A veteran journalist with almost three decades of experience, he previously served as Director of Journalism and Programming for CBC Quebec (English Services) from 2022 to 2025. Before joining CBC, Basem spent more than 20 years at the Montreal Gazette, where he held key leadership roles including Deputy Editor, Managing Editor, Digital Editor, City Editor, and Columnist. His career also includes positions as Supervising Producer of Digital Content at CTV News Montreal, Associate Editor of the Weekend Post at the National Post and Deputy Editor of Dose Magazine. A graduate of Concordia University's Journalism program, Basem has been instrumental in shaping journalism strategies and editorial standards across multiple newsrooms. His expertise spans print, digital and broadcast media, newsroom management, and editorial direction, with a particular focus on maintaining journalistic integrity and public trust in an evolving media landscape. After completing the bulk of his journalism studies in 1998, Basem returned to Concordia during the COVID-19 pandemic and completed his degree.
