Alexander Panetta
BA 00
Alex is one of Canada's most respected voices on American politics and Canada-US relations. Since 2013, Panetta has been based in Washington, D.C., where he has established himself as a leading correspondent covering American politics and its implications for Canada—first for The Canadian Press, then as editor of POLITICO Pro Canada, and most recently as a Washington-based correspondent for CBC News. Currently on sabbatical in Turkey, he is pursuing a Master's in A.I. Management at Georgetown University online.
Alex's journey began when The Link student newspaper came to his classroom one day with a sign-up sheet. He idly ticked every box without much thought. Little did he know, the paper was desperately looking for sports writers and called him the next day. That casual decision changed his life, eventually leading him from the Link newsroom to the Oval Office in Washington. His lesson for young people: tick all the boxes you can, open all the doors possible—you never know which one might change your life. After graduation, he launched a two-decade career at The Canadian Press, covering nine federal and provincial elections, international conflicts in Afghanistan and Haiti, and North American politics from Quebec City, Ottawa, Montreal, and Washington.
