Biography
Dr. Giuliana Cucinelli is an Associate Professor in the Educational Technology Program within the Department of Education at Concordia University. Her research-creation program examines the social, cultural, and educational impacts of technology. Her research agenda is organized around two interconnected streams: the first investigates the intersection of artificial intelligence with the design and development of instructional and informational content, while the second explores creative practices, memory, identity, and cultural transmission within the Italian-Canadian community.
She is a Co-Investigator on a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Connections Grant titled How Are Instructional Designers Using AI. In parallel, she is currently co-authoring a book on artificial intelligence in instructional and informational content development with Dr. Saul Carliner.
Dr. Cucinelli is also the Principal Investigator of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)-funded Exchange research-creation project Here, There, Everywhere: Between Memory and Place / Ici, là-bas, partout: entre mémoire et lieu / Qui, là, ovunque: tra memoria e luogo, co-directed with Montreal artist Michel Terroux (Terruscito). The project examines how Italian-Canadian identity is experienced, negotiated, and transmitted across generations within the diaspora, with particular attention to the role of artistic and creative practices in sustaining memory, identity, belonging, and intergenerational cultural continuity.
Prior to joining Concordia University, Dr. Cucinelli was an FRQSC Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Comparative Media Studies Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she held research affiliations with the Open Documentary Lab, the Center for Civic Media, and the Youth and Media Project at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. She also served as a Postdoctoral Research Affiliate with the Mobilities Lab in the Department of Communication Studies at Concordia University.
