Canada-CARICOM Skills Training for a Green Economy

The Canada-CARICOM Skills Training for the Green Economy Scholarships program provides students from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states with short-term exchange opportunities at publicly funded Canadian colleges and institutes. 

The scholarships support study in programs or disciplines related to the green economy, which include but are not limited to climate-smart agriculture, coastal and fisheries management, renewable energy, sustainable building techniques and agro-forestry.

About the Canada-CARICOM Skills Training for a Green Economy Scholarship

Scholarship value & duration

The scholarship value varies depending on the duration of studies:

  • $8,200 CAD for technical or vocational education and training (TVET) at the certificate, diploma and associate degree levels, for a minimum of four months or one academic term of study; or
  • $14,700 CAD for technical or vocational education and training (TVET) at the certificate, diploma and associate degree levels, for a period of eight months or two academic terms of study.

Eligible expenses

Canadian institutions will disburse scholarship funds to the scholarship recipient to contribute to the following costs:

  • visa or study/work permit fees;
  • airfare, for the scholarship recipient only, to Canada by the most direct and economical route and return airfare upon completion of the scholarship;
  • health insurance;
  • living expenses, such as accommodation, utilities and food;
  • ground public transportation, including a public transportation pass; and
  • books and supplies required for the recipient’s study, excluding computers and other equipment.

Application process

Candidates must be citizens of one of the following CARICOM member states:

Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.

For a course-oriented exchange

  • You must be enrolled full-time at a post-secondary partner institution in an eligible country and paying any tuition fees regulated by that institution at the time of application and for the full duration of the exchange.
  • You must also meet the requirements of the Concordia Student Exchange Program.

For a research-oriented exchange

  • You must be enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in an eligible country and paying tuition fees regulated by that institution at the time of application and for the full duration of the exchange.
  • A partnership agreement between Concordia University and the student’s home universities is not mandatory, but highly recommended, as applications of students from partner universities will be prioritized.
  • A Concordia professor must have accepted to supervise the student’s research exchange at Concordia.

Documents submission deadline

Concordia University has established its own internal deadline for receiving applications which is two weeks prior to the official Canada-CARICOM Skills Training for the Green Economy Scholarship deadline.

Concordia deadline: March 10, 2023

Commencement date for study or research

  • Students applying for a course-oriented exchange must arrive for the beginning of each term according to Concordia's academic calendar.
  • Research students may begin their exchange as soon as June 1, 2023 but no later than February 1, 2024.

Failure to meet these deadlines may result in the rejection of the application.

Please note that only Canadian institutions can submit applications to EduCanada. Therefore, students must first submit their required scholarship documents to Concordia University. Concordia will then apply for the scholarship on the student’s behalf.

  3. Upload the supporting documents and the nomination letter via the application form. Please read the scholarship requirements for each document very carefully as documents that are non-compliant with the scholarship guidelines will automatically lead to the rejection of the application.

Before beginning your application, you must find a professor who accepts to supervise your research exchange at Concordia University. You may consult Explore Concordia for help finding a research supervisor.
