Biography
Gabriela Petrov was raised in Toronto by Czech immigrant parents, and now lives in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. After holding the position of part-time faculty in the Dept. of Theatre at Concordia since 2021, she is moving into a full-time limited term appointment. Gabi has also taught at McGill, and Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado where she received her MFA in Contemporary Performance under Wendell Beavers, Erika Berland and Barbara Dilley. She facilitates workshops for artists independently and in partnership with organizations. For over twelve years, Gabi has practiced postmodern approaches to performance including Mary Overlie's Six Viewpoints. She has studied Body-Mind Centering® for almost 10 years in five different countries and is nearing certification as a Somatic Movement Educator. In her artistic practice and research, Gabi uses somatic movement and improvisation to explore how we inhabit spaces of performance and everyday life. As a researcher with the Performative Urbanism Lab for Spatial, Social and Scenographic Experimentation, (PULSE), she is expanding her inquiry to include how we inhabit and embody spaces of encounter with emerging technologies.
