Biography

Biography

Océane Jasor is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia University. A transnational feminist scholar, her work lies at the intersection of African studies, Black diasporic studies, and feminist theory. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in Southern Africa, West Africa, and the Caribbean, she examines contemporary African feminisms, African-diasporic interactions, and the gendered politics of return, belonging, and transnational Blackness.

She teaches courses on race and ethnic relations, global feminisms, and gender and society. Her teaching and research are informed by Black feminist, postcolonial, and decolonial perspectives that emphasize lived experience, and the production of knowledge across the Global South, with a particular focus on Africa and its diasporas.

She has published her work in various publications, including Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, Gender, Place & Culture, Agenda:Empowering Women for Gender Equity, Topia: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies, and in the edited volume The Fire That Time: Transnational Black Radicalism and the Sir George Williams Occupation. In partnership with the University of Ghana, she previously led the Queen Elizabeth Scholars project, Gender Equality and the Decolonization of Knowledge: Transnational Collaboration between West Africa and Canada. She is currently leading a SSHRC-funded research project examining gendered encounters between Africa and its diasporas.
