Joaquin Serpe

Joaquín Serpe is a Film and Moving Image Studies PhD student at Concordia University, Montreal. An Audiovisual Designer from the University of Buenos Aires, Joaquin worked in the Argentine public television industry as a sound engineer before starting his graduate studies in Canada. Working primarily in educational television, he started questioning how political discourses and identities circulate and are consolidated through different media. For his doctoral project, he examines emergent modes of public intellectuality and cultural pedagogy across contemporary media, paying particular attention to cinema, TV, and the internet.

He is an active member of Concordia’s Global Emergent Media Lab (GEM Lab), where he directed the study and research group on populist media. He is currently co-directing a research group on online video streaming communities (Life-Streaming Working Group). His research interests include political theory, the economies of media industries, labor practices in cinema and television, and contemporary Latin American cinema.
