After graduating from Concordia University’s Liberal Arts College in 1985, Montreal native Lai-King Hum earned her BCL/LLB from McGill University in 1995. She was called to the Quebec Bar in 1997 and the Ontario Bar in 1999.

In 2014, Hum founded Hum Law Firm, where she has built a reputation as a leading authority in employment law, human rights and complex workplace investigations, with a focus on equity and inclusion.

A dedicated leader in the legal community, she served as president of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (Ontario) from 2013 to 2015, and as its inaugural national president from 2015 to 2017, where she helped establish a strong national platform for advocacy on equity, justice, and opportunity within the legal profession and judiciary. During this time, she also chaired the Roundtable of Diversity Associations, collaborating with leaders across allied organizations to advance diversity, equality and inclusion. In 2017, she was appointed Discrimination and Harassment Counsel by the Law Society of Ontario.

Appointed as a Deputy Judge in 2017, Hum later served as president of the Ontario Deputy Judges Association from 2021 to 2023, guiding the organization through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, she became chair of the Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic, furthering her commitment to accessible justice for marginalized communities.

Hum’s contributions extend into the non-profit sector. She has been actively involved with Up With Women!, serving as a board member, chair of Governance and pro bono counsel, supporting women in their transition out of poverty. Her past work with the Chinese Professionals Association of Canada Foundation and Serve! Canada reflects a longstanding dedication to community development and public service.

In recognition of her impact, Hum received the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025 for more than two decades of service to the legal profession. In 2026, she was honored with the Law Society Medal and the Concordia University Alumni Association’s Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award.
