Career questions with Rachelle
What do you love most about your work, and what inspired you to pursue this career in the first place?
While I was pursuing my bachelor's degree, I went on exchange for a year in England and in Spain (two exchanges back to back). On exchange, I met a ton of business students, which ultimately made me interested in pursuing a master's degree in international management.
After my master's degree from Ivey Business School, I still didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted to do, but landed a job in a staffing agency. I did a mix of sales, account management and recruitment. After being in that role for a year and a half, I landed a job at Deloitte in Campus (Early Talent) recruitment, and have had six different roles in recruitment, consulting, and change management and communications since then!
Looking back, what skills have been the biggest gamechangers in your career?
Adaptability, relationship building and curiosity to try new things!
How did Concordia prepare you for your career?
I loved how Concordia provided me with the opportunity to go on exchange for a year, because I felt that really expanded my horizons! I also like how there were so many different opportunities to get involved on campus, such as clubs and associations and networking events!
What is a standout memory from your time at Concordia?
I loved going to the networking events that the Mathematics, Actuarial, and Statistics Student Association (MASSA) offered. They helped me meet a lot of recruiters hiring for different types of roles, and other students in similar programs.
While I was abroad, I had the opportunity to take different courses (core and elective) in different countries across the world, and had the ability to travel during my studies.
If you could give your younger self one powerful piece of advice, what would it be?
Pick one or two job titles you're looking to start your career in and create your personal brand around that. Targeting a couple of roles really helps narrow down what you're looking for, and it makes it easier for people in your network to help you get into what interests you the most.
Just because you pick a specific role to start your career does not mean you need to stick to it for life! People change jobs multiple times throughout their careers — you just need to pick a place to start!
What’s the most exciting shift happening in your industry right now?
Companies are looking to standardize, modernize and optimize the way they work by using AI tools to drive greater efficiency, stronger margins and keep their competitive edge.
