Dr. Mary Vipond

Distinguished Professor Emeritus

Since retiring in 2008, Mary Vipond has combined leisure and volunteer activities with ongoing research and writing. She has published several articles based on previous research on the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission and the Royal Tour of 1939. She also considerably revised The Mass Media in Canada for a fourth edition published in 2011. Her main ongoing project has been a book on censorship and propaganda at the CBC during the Second World War. It examines the extent to which the CBC acted as an “instrument of state” in assisting the federal government to administer radio censorship and in producing propaganda programs to build morale on the home front. She remains involved with the Concordia Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism Studies and the Media and Communication History Committee of the Canadian Historical Association. She can be contacted at mary.vipond@concordia.ca.
