Teresa Dorey

Sculpture and Ceramics

Informed by materiality and sustained research, Teresa Dorey’s practice explores the body and relational experiences through haptics and objects. Employing mediums such as ceramics and metal, she considers expanding the boundaries of craft, design and fine art experimentally, providing a means to delve into the body's nuances, utility and historical metaphors. Characterized by biomorphic ambiguity, her work reflects the convergence of emotional and physical encounters shaped by daily routines and ambiance.

Inspired by environments, Dorey intertwines unlikely materials to convey biodiversity, advocating for empathy towards surroundings. Her artistic vision extends to imagining positive speculative futures centred on equality. Challenging the concept of individual autonomy, she dismisses it as a myth, advocating for acknowledging mutual dependence to enhance society. Aligning these concerns with social ecology, Dorey suggests parallels between discriminatory systems and environmental destruction. Interactive installations in her work underscore equality and stimulate speculative thinking, fostering hope by nurturing social and physical environments.

Teresa Dorey is an interdisciplinary visual artist based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. Dorey has been published, participated in residencies, and exhibited across Canada and internationally in France, Italy, and Denmark. She has been the recipient of various grants including Canada Council for the Arts, Concordia University, Société de développement des entreprises culturelles and Conseil des arts de Montréal.
