Florence Viau

Sculpture and Ceramics

Encompassing sculpture, painting, printmaking and drawing, Florence Viau’s practice examines the making of images in different human technological contexts. Her work focuses on the themes of nature, memory and language, as well as tools and technologies, ancient or current, that can be used to preserve them. She draws inspiration from both the archaeological and digital worlds, where landscape is (de)materialized through time and interface, and tangible matter is confronted with the complexity of our communicative surfaces. Her current research focuses on various celestial and luminous phenomena that can be observed with the eye or a lens, in line with ancient astronomy and today's space exploration.

Florence Viau (1998, Montréal) received a bachelor's degree in visual and media arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal (2021) and a scholarship for excellence in sculpture from the McAbbie Foundation. She has participated in various group exhibitions including at ARTCH (4th edition), Centre CLARK, le Livart and the MACLAU. Her work was also exhibited at Arprim center d'essais en arts imprimés in the group show Première impression, for which she won the Prix Albert-Dumouchel 2020-2021. Her work is part of multiple collections including at Ville de Longueuil and Musée Pointe-à-Callière, cité d'archéologie et d'histoire de Montréal.
