Associate Professor, Centre for Engineering in Society
Tanja Tajmel studied Physics (BSc), Meteorology (BSc) and Philosophy (BA) at the Graz University of Technology and the Karl-Franzens University in Graz, Austria as well as the University of Padova, Italy. She received a Master in Physics Education and in Philosophy Education from Karl-Franzens University in Graz and a PhD in Physics Didactics from Humboldt-University Berlin, Germany. For many years, she was instructing student teachers at Humboldt-University Berlin and was training language awareness for STEM teachers in Germany, Austria and Italy. Before joining Concordia University in 2018, she was Professor at the University of Education Upper Austria.

Tanja Tajmel is an interdisciplinary scholar with a broad research and teaching portfolio. Her main interest lies in investigating the politics of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and how STEM education and STEM discourses contribute to social (in)equality. She studied linguistic barriers for second language learners in the science classroom and examined the 'diversity'-discourse in the context of STEM education in Germany from a postcolonial perspective. Tajmel found that the discourse supports binary thinking and 'othering' of migrants and that neoliberal arguments feed this discourse. Currently she is investigating the ignorance of colonialism in contemporary science and STEM education. She promotes a hegemony-critical attitude towards STEM education and is a long-time advocate for the human right to STEM education.
