This presentation examines why Quebec-born Francophone and Anglophone university undergraduates want to stay in Quebec or leave. Questionnaire results showed that Anglophones were more willing to leave Quebec than Francophones. Key push and pull factors included economic prospects, socio-affective pressures, and linguistic tensions, the latter being especially important among English-speaking Quebecers.
The presentation will be followed by a commentary by Dr. Chedly Belkhodja who will engage with some of the issues that Dr. Bourhis’ research raises.
Dr. Bourhis' research forms one of the chapters in the new QUESCREN book published by the Presses de l’Université Laval entitled La Charte. La loi 101 et les Québécois d'expression anglaise / The Charter. Bill 101 and English-Speaking Quebec, which may be ordered here in paper or online formats.
A brief launch of the book will take place at 1 pm, right after the Lunch & Learn event. All participants are welcome to remain on the same Zoom link and hear more about the book from editors Lorraine O’Donnell and Patrick Donovan.
Please note that registration is required for attending either or both events (only one registration is necessary).
