Research interests

Daniel Dagenais is member of Société and of the Groupe interuniversitaire d’étude de la postmodernité (a journal and research group founded by the late Michel Freitag). His work can be divided into three domains of reflection: a strong concern for social theory, namely the meaning of the renewal of sociological theory from the 1980s onwards (he edited: Hannah Arendt, le totalitarisme et le monde contemporain, PUL, 2003); an ongoing concern with the transformation of the family institution (see his The (Un)Making of the Modern Family, UBC Press, 2007); and his current research that focuses on youth suicide, a phenomenon which he relates to the collapse of the matrimonial regulation of the coming of age. He teaches Social Problems, Contemporary sociological theory, The Family, and the Sociology of suicide.
