Richard Schmid is a professor in Concordia's Department of Education, Graduate Programs in Educational Technology, where he has taught since 1977. He served as department chair, starting in 1981, for almost 20 combined years. His managerial approach was to support faculty and staff to be the best that they could be — not as a director, but as a facilitator.

Since those early days, the Department of Education has become one of the top ranked education units in Canada.

Schmid organized several highly successful conferences in Educational Technology (Ed Tech), primarily involving Concordia's alumni — more than 1,500 MA and PhD Ed Tech graduates.

He served as program chair for the Canadian Society for Studies in Education when Concordia hosted Canada’s Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences Congress in 2010. The largest ever, this event featured a keynote from the Honourable Ed Broadbent and the launch of the Canadian Education Deans’ Accord on Indigenous Education.

A prolific researcher, Schmid fosters empowerment and attention to issues of social justice with NGOs and the community.
