Courses offered

Campus Safety and Prevention Services training courses are designed to better prepare individuals to deal with emergency situations both at home and in the workplace.

As of May 2022, Staff and Faculty members should access Campus Safety and Prevention Services training courses via My CU Account > Training > Employee Training > My Learning or by clicking on this link to UNITY’s My Learning. 

Note: Minimal attendance applies to all courses and information sessions. If the minimum attendance is not attained, the course will be canceled and participants will be offered an alternative date. 

Emergency preparedness

This is a short 1.5-hour presentation to better prepare the Concordia community for the different emergencies that could occur on campus.  It will cover the different risk, the corresponding procedures as well as details about the emergency notification system.

We offer a personalized training to university students or employees with mobility issues.  We will explain the procedure and show you what you need know and do in the event of an emergency and building evacuation. The training may include a demonstration on the use of Evac-chairs.

To register for this training, please send us an email at emergency.management@concordia.ca. We will contact you to coordinate the training with you. 

First aid & CPR training

This is a one-day (8-hour) emergency first aid and CPR, level C course that is certified by the Heart and Stoke foundation.

Participants will learn adult, child and infant CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation), how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) as well as how to administer an EpiPen in cases of anaphylactic shock.  The course will also cover how to deal with a choking victim as well as common medical situations and trauma.

Upon successful completion, candidates receive a certification electronic card from the Heart and Stroke Foundation which is valid for 3 years.

This course is open to the general public at a cost of $110.00 and $90.00 for students, staff and faculty members of Concordia.

Courses begin at 08:30 and finish at 16:30.

This course is only available to Concordia employees that are CERT trained.

This is a two-day (16-hour) basic first aid and CPR, level A course that is certified by the CNESST given to trained CERT employees.

Participants will learn adult CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation), how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) as well as how to administer an EpiPen in cases of anaphylactic shock.  The course will also cover how to deal with a choking victim as well as common medical situations and trauma.

Upon successful completion, candidates receive a certification card from the CNESST which is valid for 3 years.

There is no cost for this course (but you must be a trained CERT).

Concordia Emergency Response Team (CERT) training

Strongly recommended for CERT members:

The Concordia Emergency Response Team (CERT) are staff and student volunteers who are trained to assist during emergency situations that occur on campus.  CERT are trained to assist during building evacuations and other emergencies that could occur at Concordia.  The 3 hour orientation session provides knowledge of the role and responsibilities of CERT during an emergency and how to respond to different emergencies on campus. *This training is only available to current university employees and students.  

There is no charge for this training.

This 2-hour course provides participants with basic fire prevention best practices for both the home and workplace and a hands on training of the different types of fire extinguisher and the opportunity to practice using a fire extinguisher on a on a real fire simulator.

CERT Renewal Training can also be taken online through Moodle or My Learning for existing CERT members only. CERT members can take this training to refresh their CERT status if they have taken the Orientation training more than 3 years ago. 

To access this training, you must have a Concordia netname and password to login. If you are having trouble logging in, just email help@concordia.ca with your Concordia netname. 

This training is an introduction on how to de-escalate situations with individuals demonstrating disruptive behavior. The De-escalation training is geared towards frontline staff working with individuals that have the potential to become unorganized. The training allows participants to identify when they should call for help, how to recognize the signs of anxious, aggressive or defensive behaviors and how to use the proper approach and attitude in response. 

The training provides tools to communicate effectively with individuals and focusses on early intervention techniques to prevent or manage disruptive behaviors. The training teaches staff to safely respond to difficult behavior and manage crisis situation with confidence. 

The workshop is offered to all administrative and support staff members, as well as faculty and student CERT members. The training has a duration of 1.5 hours and is only offered in person. Departments can schedule private courses from a minimum of 5 and up to 12 participants.

Online training courses

You can now take the Emergencies at Concordia: What You Need to Know training online through Moodle or My Learning. 

To access this training on Moodle, you must have a Concordia netname and password to login. If you are having trouble logging in, just email help@concordia.ca with your Concordia netname. 

This training will prepare you on what to do when a fire alarm is activated at Concordia. The training will cover: 

  • The basics of emergency notifications.
  • How to report a fire alarm.
  • How fire alarm systems work in different buildings.
  • When and how to evacuate a building.

This training is available on Moodle for students under the Emergencies at Concordia training and on My Learning for staff and faculty members.
