Service dog registration
The presence of service dogs and other animals at Concordia is governed by the Animals on University Premises Policy (VPSS-22).
Permitted animals on campus
As outlined in the policy, only the following animals are permitted inside university buildings:
- Research animals
- Registered service dogs
- Approved therapy animals
What is a service dog?
Service dogs are specially trained to perform tasks that assist people with visible and non-visible disabilities, such as:
- Epilepsy
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Diabetes
- Mobility limitations
Guide dogs, support individuals with low or no vision, are considered service dogs. All service dogs are trained and tested to ensure they can safely accompany their handler in public spaces.
Why is registration required?
To ensure safety and access to campus, all service dogs must be registered with Campus Safety and Prevention Services. Registration helps protect:
- The safety of the service dog and its handler
- The broader university community
- Other service dogs on campus
Registration requirements
To register your service dog, you must:
- Complete the registration form (see below)
- Confirm that the dog and handler have completed a service dog training program
- Proof of a public access test (within the last 5 years) that meets nationally recognized standards OR completion of the Canadian Kennel Club’s Canine Good Neighbour evaluation (within the last 5 years).
- Proof of liability insurance for the dog, provided by the owner or the training organization
After registration
Once your documents have been reviewed and approved, you’ll receive a photo ID card for your service dog. This ID confirms registration and helps ensure smooth access to university buildings.
