Position Summary:
I require a Research Assistant – Music and Gender Studies to collect data charting which revered jazz musicians first studied music with their mothers. The RA will scan popular jazz texts such as DeVeaux and Giddins’ Jazz, Alyn Shipton’s A New History of Jazz, Ted Gioia’s The History of Jazz and Keeping Time, edited by Robert Walser, identifying when this took place. Research outside of these sources will also be required, however, I am interested not only in when this took place but also how this “domestic pedagogy” is narrativized in these texts. The RA will provide this information on an excel spreadsheet, noting the musician, mother’s name, biographical information, notes, and citations in Chicago (NB & AD) and MLA. The RA will additionally produce a literature review covering themes such as domestic pedagogy, feminized labour, and mothering.
Responsibilities will include:
· Performing literature review(s), data collection, and data synthesis
· Other research tasks as outlined by Principal Investigator
Job Qualifications/Requirements:
· Active enrollment in either a Master’s program, or PhD program at Concordia University
· Ability to synthesize text
· Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, and proficiency in citation styles (MLA & Chicago)
