Staff, faculty and research chairs shine at the Dean’s Award for Excellence

On Tuesday, November 26, members of the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS) gathered at Loyola campus to applaud the winners of the annual Dean’s Awards for Excellence.

“It is truly an honour to be awarded the Dean's Award for Excellence in Service by a Staff Member!” said honoree Sheri Kuit, department administrator, Sociology and Anthropology.

“To be recognized by members of the Concordia community, who I have the utmost respect for, is an amazing feeling.”

Fellow staff member Mircea Mandache, graduate program assistant for the departments of Journalism and Communication Studies, was also honoured for excellence in service.

“I always felt fortunate to work in the Departments of Journalism and Communication Studies and being nominated and receiving this award is a reaffirmation of how great this community is. Having great students and amazing faculty and colleagues made managing the six graduate programs possible.”

The awards had traditionally been given to staff and faculty alone, but in 2015, Faculty of Arts and Science Dean André Roy made the decision to include more members of the FAS community.

"Early on in my mandate, I decided to expand the traditional Staff and Faculty Awards to include new Chairs, and other faculty who have earned distinction over the past year,” said Roy.

“So, now we have the Dean's Excellence Awards each year. With so much excellence in our community, there's a lot to celebrate! This evening is always one of the highlights of my year. Each of the honorees has contributed something special to our shared project, and it is wonderful to gather and recognize their achievements together.”

Alexandre J.S. Morin, who joined the Department of Psychology in January of 2017, earned an award for Excellence in Scholarship (Senior).“Concordia University feels like an oasis where all forms of diversity are not only welcome, but celebrated,” said Morin.

“High-caliber research is truly supported and valued. Being nominated for this award is for me a form of recognition of having made the right decision in joining this University, and an immense encouragement to keep on doing what I do best.”

The awards offered Roy a chance to thank the FAS people who have made his tenure as Dean so memorable. Roy will end his term in the summer of 2020.

“This being my last year as Dean , I can honestly say that it is the people in our faculty who have most impressed me over the last six years,” he said.

“I look forward to seeing what all of tonight's honorees will be doing in the years to come!”
