Our 5 Commitments

Faculty of Arts and Science: A world of disciplines, a community of values.

The 5 Commitments (5Cs) are the result of ongoing conversations in the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS). Over the past few years, our members—faculty, staff, and students—have gathered in different settings to reflect on who we are, what we value, and how we contribute. These discussions, shaped during retreats, during conversations around strategic initiatives, around the work of our units, and during exchanges around our core mission and its importance, have helped the Faculty leadership to articulate these commitments.

Rather than imposing rigid priorities, the Faculty's 5Cs affirm the shared values that already guide our work and will continue to do so. They are meant to inspire rather than constrain, supporting how we teach, research, collaborate, and engage with the world. In other words, they are intended as a complement to (rather than as a replacement for) the principles that largely define what we do, such as academic freedom, community engagement, sustainability, decolonization, and equity, diversity and inclusion.  This is a starting point for further dialogue. As we move forward, these commitments will continue to evolve, shaped by the people who bring them to life every day.

We want to hear from you!

We are interested in hearing how the 5Cs resonate with the Faculty of Arts and Science community. Whether you are a faculty member, a staff member or a student, please take a moment to answer a few questions that will help us understand how your work aligns with the 5Cs.
