Milieux Institute
Inside Milieux Institute: Art, technology & innovation
Live virtual tour exploring research-creation, digital culture and collaborative experimentation.
Next-Generation Cities Institute (NGCI)
Advancing sustainable urban innovation
Michael Bossert, Manager of Strategy, Innovation, and Outreach, will showcase the institute as a dynamic hub for interdisciplinary research on the future of cities. He will present pioneering work on urban solutions, promote collaborative research, and highlight opportunities for graduate students to engage in impactful projects.
Two PhD students affiliated with the institute—Isra Abo Iqsaysa and Daniel Curwin—will share their experiences in urban innovation studies and demonstrate how the institute supports emerging scholars. A Tools4Cities team member, Jiarui Li, will present data-driven city twin simulations through gamification, emphasizing their role in citizen engagement, using CITYplayer as an example.
Institute for Research on Migration and Society (IRMS)
Multidisciplinary perspectives on migration and integration
Mireille Paquet, PhD, Director of IRMS, will present how the institute serves as Concordia’s hub for immigration research and fosters a strong multidisciplinary research environment. The presentation will highlight IRMS’s evolving research themes, collaborative culture and opportunities for graduate students.
Jocelyne Brad, PhD student and Research Associate at IRMS, will share her experience as a migration researcher and reflect on the role the institute plays in supporting emerging scholars.
Applied AI Institute (AI2)
Interdisciplinary research and responsible applications
Lindsay Rodgers, PhD, Advisor, Knowledge Mobilization, will draw on her background in Cultural Studies and feminist research to highlight the value of interdisciplinarity in AI research. Deborah Ahenkorah, Responsible AI Specialist (MA in Information Studies), will provide an overview of what responsible AI means at AI2, how it shapes our practices and how it informs the projects we pursue.
The science of logging in
Jeremy Clark, PhD, P.Eng
Associate Professor, Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering
You just installed an app and it asks you to log in. How should you prove it’s really you? A password? A code on your phone? “Sign in with Google”? A fingerprint, face scan or swipe pattern? Why are there so many options? In this lecture, we explore common login methods, how attackers bypass them, and the trade-offs between convenience, privacy and security.
Connecting knowledge, creating impact: The case for interdisciplinary graduate research
Tanja Tajmel, PhD
Associate Professor, Centre for Engineering in Society
Interdisciplinary research plays an important role in addressing the complex challenges of the 21st century as outlined in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Global goals such as clean energy, decent work or social equalities cannot be reached by one discipline alone, but require integrated approaches that draw on diverse knowledge bases. By combining methods, theoretical frameworks and perspectives from different fields, interdisciplinary research fosters innovation and promotes more comprehensive problem-solving strategies leading to solutions that are not only scientifically sound but beneficial for the entire society.
Your reputation starts now: Ethics, values and trust in graduate school
Jordan LeBel, PhD, ASC, CDir
Associate Dean, Academic Programs and Development, School of Graduate Studies
Professor, Marketing, John Molson School of Business
Concordia graduates are expected to uphold high ethical standards. But how do ethics help in making research decisions? What is the relationship between ethics, values and trust? Drawing on well-known ethical failures from business and research, LeBel explores why developing a strong ethical compass is essential in graduate school and how it helps shape your professional reputation beyond your degree.
The social life of emotions
Valérie de Courville Nicol, PhD
Professor, Sociology and Anthropology
Why do some groups experience more anger, shame or anxiety, while others more pride, respect or awe? What makes certain emotions feel appropriate, legitimate or even necessary in some social contexts but not in others? Why has the concept of emotional intelligence become so salient today?
This lecture explores the idea that emotions are not simply personal, natural reactions to external phenomena, but socially organized orientations shaped by cultural norms, moral expectations, social hierarchies and mediated scripts. From the rules that tell us how we ought to feel, to the ways our social positioning structures our experiences of danger, security, worth and responsibility, emotions have a rich and dynamic social life.
Drawing on sociological and cultural theory, Valérie De Courville Nicol introduces perspectives that understand emotions as simultaneously personal and impersonal — lived yet formed through historically grounded systems of meaning and power.
