Award holder information

Fellowship Payments

  • Scholarship payments are issued five (5) working days after the DNE date of each term, once full-time registration is confirmed, unless otherwise specified in your award notification.
  • Payments are made directly to your student account and applied to outstanding tuition and fees. If a credit balance remains in the account, you may request a refund by cheque or Interac e-Transfer through your Student Centre.
  • Cheques are automatically mailed to your address on file within 10 business days after you have requested a refund. Interac e-Transfer refunds are typically processed within 10 business days.

Conditions of Tenure

  1. Tenure of the award starts as specified in your award offer. Should you be unable to start your program at that time, you may request a one-term deferment of your award. A request for deferment must be done in writing to your Graduate Program Director. If you are unable to start your program within one term of the award start date, your award offer will be withdrawn.
  2. You must maintain full-time registration status in the graduate degree program specified in your award notification, in each term during which the award is held.
  3. As an internal award recipient, you’re expected to devote most of your time to completing your graduate degree. In order to do so, it's recommended that you do not work more than 15 hours per week.
  4. Before you accept other employment, we suggest that you discuss and receive consent from your supervisor and department to ensure your employment is compatible with your activities as a graduate student and an award recipient. External granting agencies may also restrict the number of hours of employment permitted. Contact the external agencies directly for their policies.
  5. If you are a multi-year award recipient and plan to work full-time during the summer or any other term, you are required to notify the Graduate Awards Advisor of the School of Graduate Studies by email at least two (2) months prior to the work term by requesting a one-term deferment of their award in writing:, indicating “Work Term Deferment” in the subject line.
  6. You may request a maximum of two (2) deferments of one (1) term each for employment purposes; the work terms cannot be consecutive. You must request a leave of absence from your program during these terms.
  7. You cannot be on paid leave from your employer, on a paid sabbatical, nor pursuing full-time employment during your term of tenure. In these cases, your award may be held in name only.
  8. As an international student, you cannot hold a Concordia International Tuition Award of Excellence if your tuition fees are paid through a scholarship that you hold, if you become a permanent resident, or if you benefit from an international tuition fee remission as a result of an agreement between the Government of Québec and your home country. In these cases, you must notify the Graduate Awards Office.
  9. During a leave of absence, your award payments will stop for any terms while you are on leave, and the award disbursements will continue once you return from leave (without penalty). For example, if you have been on a leave for two terms, the payments will resume for those two terms following your return. The total value of the award will not be affected by your leave of absence and the total tenure of the award will be adjusted to accommodate the leave.
  10. If you receive an external award valued at $40,000 or more, and you were awarded a Concordia University Graduate Doctoral Fellowship, the Fellowship will be reallocated to another eligible student for the duration of your external award.
  11. If your external award ends before the full twelve-term duration of the Fellowship (counted from when you first accepted it), the remaining terms of your Fellowship will be honoured and you will receive the balance.
  12. You are responsible for remaining in good academic standing by maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 with no failure grades and no more than one C, in order to receive approval for instalments each term. Sanctions under the Academic Code are also not permitted.
  13. Should you be granted a retroactive change to your program (status changed to part-time or full-time, or a program switch) or registration (retroactive DNE, DISC, Leave of Absence, Parental Leave, Withdrawal from program), the School of Graduate Studies will recover that modified term’s disbursements. Consequently, you will need to honour your financial commitment to your student account.
