Registration
Start by reviewing the university's guide to the registration process: this provides invaluable help.
Review our handy checklists to plan the courses you need to take. We recommend you take the Stages in order.
Register for courses as early as possible — courses tend to fill up quickly.
- See the Undergraduate Academic Calendar for all degree requirements.
- Consult our list of undergraduate courses, including course descriptions.
Submit any questions to philosophy.fas@concordia.ca.
Introductory course formats
Introductory courses in Philosophy include two components:
- lectures delivered by a professor
- conferences led by Teaching Assistants.
Conferences are smaller groups meetings intended to offer a form of learning support. In conferences, students review course material. The conferences provide a small-classroom experience and allow students to ask questions and delve deeper into the course subject matter.
Planning your electives
In addition to the courses listed on the Checklists, Major and Honours in Philosophy students must complete a minimum of 24 credits outside of Philosophy.
In order to satisfy the Arts and Science General Education requirement, at least six of these credits must come from courses outside of the Humanities disciplinary sector.
These may be courses in the Social Science and Science disciplinary sectors. Courses in the Humanities sector DO NOT count towards the General Education requirement for Philosophy students.
Taking external credits
Through various agreements, Concordia students can take courses at other institutions.
Under the Quebec Inter-University Transfer Agreement, through the Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire (BCI), you may apply to take courses at other Quebec universities that will count for credit toward your degree at Concordia while paying Concordia tuition.
You must have completed 24 credits at Concordia and be in good academic standing.
To apply, complete the BCI authorization to transfer credits form. Your application will be reviewed by your home institution (program advisor, Faculty Student Affairs office, Registrar’s Office) and once it is approved, it will be sent to the host university for review and approval.
Be sure to check course availability and requirements of the host university before submitting your application.
Deadlines
These deadlines vary by institution. Generally, applications are due by:
- December 15 for the winter term
- August 15 for the fall term
- April 15 for May courses
- May 15 for June courses
- June 15 for July courses
Applications submitted after the school’s specified deadlines will not be approved.
Follow-up
Follow up on the status of your application by logging into the BCI form. Be sure to read any comments added to your application. The confirmation of registration status for each course will be updated on the BCI form shortly following the add/drop deadline in the specified term. Your home university will access your registration status on the BCI form and assess your tuition accordingly.
Registration
Once your application is approved by the host institution, you will be sent an email confirming your student ID and the steps you will need to follow to register for the course(s) you have been approved to take in the specified term. Students register using the host institution’s online student information system. If the course you are interested in has any prerequisites, or requires departmental approval, you must contact the department offering the course.
Questions?
Consult the Undergraduate Program Director during advising hours.
Change of concentration
Students can add a program (i.e., add a Minor or second Major) or change their concentration (Major X to Major Y). Some departments have specific requirements before accepting you into their programs. It is recommended you visit the department webpage first.
Honours in Philosophy
Students who wish to change their concentration from the Major in Philosophy to the Honours concentration, must make an appointment with the Undergraduate Program Director in Philosophy. Admission to an Honours program has additional requirements. For consideration, you must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher to change your program concentration to Honours and show no grades below a “C.” According to the Undergraduate Academic Calendar:
Honours applications are due December 1 for winter term, August 15 for fall term.
Graduating students
When you are nearing the completion of your degree, you must apply to graduate. Don’t wait until you have received your grades before submitting your application! The deadline is mid-January for spring convocation and mid-July for fall convocation.
