Counselling and Psychological Services is a short-term outpatient counselling centre which provides virtual appointments to currently registered Concordia students. Personalized care plans may include one-on-one appointments, psycho-educational workshops and/or community support.
At times, a single session with a counsellor may be all that is needed to gain perspective or relief related to a challenging situation.
At a single session appointment, the counsellor will begin by gaining a clear definition of your need for the session and will assist you in mobilizing an action plan using a solution-focused model. Together you will focus on identifying barriers, brainstorming possible solutions and using your strengths and resources to make positive changes. At the completion of your session, the counsellor will provide you with an intervention plan.
Please be aware that single sessions are NOT a substitute for on-going counselling, nor are they meant for students who are experiencing a mental health crisis. These sessions are not available for those students already making use of our short-term counselling service.
Short-term counselling helps patients find new approaches to managing mental health concerns and challenging life situations. Counselling is a confidential and safe space to develop skills and explore new perspectives, as well as increase your self-awareness and build resilience.
Your counselling plan, including the number of sessions and their frequency, will be decided upon between you and your counsellor and vary according to your needs. Many students make significant progress within three to five sessions.
Because we are a short-term counselling centre, some services go beyond the scope of our practice and require a referral to specialized services. If you require long-term treatment and/or specialized services, we will refer you to the appropriate care or service provider.
Counselling and Psychological Services provides virtual appointments to currently registered Concordia students on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are currently being followed by a counsellor or were meeting with a counsellor within the last year, please email your counsellor directly to arrange for an appointment.
If you are new to the service and would like to see a counsellor, send an email to CPS.email@example.com. Please include your full name, student ID and a preferred phone number and email. Our Service Assistants will contact you to set up a triage appointment with a counsellor.
Triage is your first step if you’re seeking personal counselling. These appointments are mandatory for all students new to our counselling services or who haven’t received services in the last academic year.
During a triage appointment, you will have a brief conversation with a counsellor to discuss your reasons for seeking counselling. This meeting is not a counselling appointment. Triage appointments help us evaluate your needs and direct you to the most appropriate resource which may include short-term counselling at Concordia or a referral to more specialised services in the community.
Wait-times for follow-up appointments depend on several factors including demand for counselling, your needs and situation, as well as your availability. Scheduling flexibility can help secure a follow-up appointment quickly.
If you have access to insurance that would allow you to have services in the community, a list of potential resources can be provided at triage. Please note that if you are being seen by another mental health practitioner outside of Concordia, your mental health needs will be best served by continuing to see them.
