Course outline guide (syllabus)

The course outline or course syllabus are often used interchangeably though the former is considered to be a high level document while syllabus is the term faculty may be more famiiar with because it focuses on the specific teaching and learning requirements of a given course. The CTL uses course outline because it provides the information students need to be able to meet the requirements of any course. It also provides students important information concerning support services that are available to help them achieve academic and personal success as well as reminders of institutional policies and guidelines.

Reviewing your course outline with your students

When you are reviewing your course outline at the beginning of the semester, it is a good practice to talk about these services and to point out the contact information to your students. Students may experience academic or personal difficulties at any point during their academic career. So providing this information on all course outlines for every level of class means that if a student has a question, they can find the help they need easily. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that a list services be included in every course outline.

Before you get started with your course outline, be sure to have all your course information on hand. This includes days & times of lessons/labs, and the room number(s), textbook and/or course pack and any other required materials for students (i.e. software, supplies, etc.). When you are ready, follow the steps below to prepare your syllabus while referring to the Course outline guide below.

Your course outline provides information which students need to be able to meet the requirements of any course. It can also serve as a reminder to students of all the support services that are available to help them achieve academic and personal success.
