Position title: Research Associate
Contract Duration: August 1, 2025, to August 1, 2026
Salary: $36.00 per hour

Job description
Reporting to Carly Ziter, and working in collaboration with Sean Thomas (U of T) and Janani Sivarajah (U Laval), the candidate will be responsible for carrying out research tasks related to an Alliance Missions grant on novel strategies to mitigate GHG emissions from urban forestry waste. Key research tasks include scenario development and modelling to understand the implications of biochar application in urban forests for greenhouse gas emissions and ecosystem service provision across multiple Canadian cities.
Responsibilities will include
- Lead research tasks including literature review and synthesis; data coordination, quantitative analysis
- Report progress to supervisors monthly
- Participate in interdisciplinary team projects
- Liaise with postdoc and graduate student researchers to understand site-specific empirical data
Qualifications/skills required
- PhD in a field pertinent to the primary responsibilities (e.g., urban ecology, forestry, environmental and atmospheric sciences)
- At least two years of work experience in urban forestry
- Strong spoken and written English
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines
- Good communication skills with the ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- A strong understanding of greenhouse gas emissions in an urban forestry context
- Experience with scientific literature review and synthesis
- Experience with remote sensing, GIS, and machine learning
- Ability to work with and effectively synthesize large datasets
