More opportunities

Consult the Volunteer Bureau of Montreal, or go directly to the source! Think about causes you care about and look into community organizations. You can look at 211 or MaCommunauté.

Apply to volunteer positions

Once you find an opportunity that interests you, contact the organization directly. Volunteer postings will include the organization’s contact person and what information you need to provide.

Applying for a volunteer role can be a lot like applying for a job! It’s common for organizations to ask you to fill out a form, send your resumé, or write an email expressing your interest. Some organizations might also ask you to do an interview or a background check before you start volunteering.

Want help? Career Advising and Professional Success offers resources and workshops on job search, interview preparation and resumé writing, all of which can also help you apply for volunteer opportunities. You can meet with a career advisor to review your resumé and cover letter.

If you don't hear back

It’s normal for it to take time for a volunteer coordinator to respond to your application. If it’s only been a few days, keep waiting! If you don’t hear back from the organization in a few weeks, then you can send them a follow-up email.

Some volunteer opportunities are competitive, just like a job, so it’s possible that they chose another candidate. Sometimes non-profit organizations are simply short-staffed or too busy, and they may fail to get back to you. If that happens, don’t be discouraged. Keep applying for other opportunities!
