Building a strong thesis

From working ideas to clear arguments.

Academic writing at the university level is thesis-driven. Every strong academic paper is built around a clear thesis statement that shapes the argument and guides the research.

A thesis statement is not just what your paper is “about.” It is your central claim, the position you are taking, and the idea you will defend with evidence.

Think of the thesis as the set-up for the entire paper. If the thesis is clear and workable, the paper becomes much easier to plan, write, and revise. If the thesis is weak or unclear, writing often feels disorganized or overwhelming.

What a thesis statement does 

A strong thesis statement: 

  • States your main idea 
  • Takes a clear position (one side of an arguable issue) 
  • Signals how the argument will be supported 

The working thesis: Where academic writing starts 

A thesis is never perfect at the beginning.  

Most academic papers begin with a working thesis, which is a tentative claim that helps you start researching and drafting. As you read, think, and gather evidence, your thesis will almost always change. 

How to decide on a thesis 

  1. Select key ideas from your assigned topic and/or course material. 
  2. Choose the idea you find most interesting, important, or puzzling. 
  3. Take a position on that idea. 
  4. Write a working thesis to guide your first draft. 

Useful starting frames

  • This paper argues that…X is true because A, B and C 
  • X contributes to Y because A, B and C  
  • Although X is commonly believed, this paper shows that Y is in fact true because A, B and C 

Revising the thesis as you write 

As you work on your paper, ask yourself: 

  • Do my sources actually support this claim?  
  • Am I arguing something too obvious, too broad, or too vague? 
  • Have I become more interested in a different angle? 

Many strong papers end up arguing something different from what the writer first imagined. This is a sign of learning, not failure. 

What makes a good thesis statement? 

A strong thesis statement: 

  • Takes a clear stand (expresses your point of view) 
  • Is a statement, not a question 
  • Is narrow enough to be proven within the assignment length 
  • Makes a claim that reasonable readers could disagree with 
  • Is clear, specific, and usually one or two sentences 
  • Signals how the argument will be developed with support 

Topic: Social media and university students

  1. Working thesis (too broad) 
    • Social media affects university students.
    • Problem: Too vague: affects how? why? who?
  2. Revised thesis (still weak) 
    • Social media negatively affects university students’ mental health. 
    • Problem: Very broad and hard to support fully in one paper. 
  3. Narrowed thesis (evidence problems) 
    • Social media causes anxiety and depression in all university students. 
    • Problem: Overstated claim; evidence doesn’t support “all students.”
  4. Evidence-driven revision (getting there) 
    • Heavy social media use is associated with increased anxiety among university students. 
    • Better, but still descriptive rather than argumentative. 
  5. Strong, final thesis (now you have something to work with) 
    • Heavy social media use contributes to increased anxiety among university students by intensifying social comparison, disrupting sleep patterns, and increasing academic distraction. 
      • Clear position 
      • Arguable 
      • Supported by evidence 
      • Paper structure now follows naturally 
    • Once this thesis is set, the paper becomes easier to outline: one section per support point. 

How to evaluate your thesis statement 

Ask yourself: 

  • Is it a complete sentence (not a question)? 
  • Does it make a claim someone could disagree with? 
  • Is it specific enough for this assignment’s length? 
  • Does it reflect what my evidence actually supports? 
  • Does it clearly suggest how the paper will be organized? 
  • What evidence would my reader need to be convinced? 

If you can answer these confidently, your thesis is doing its job. 

Conclusion 

Writer’s block often isn’t a writing problem; it’s a thesis problem. 

When the thesis is clear, reasonable, and evidence-based: 

  • Writing feels more focused 
  • Decisions become easier 
  • The paper starts to “write itself” 

Start with a working thesis, stay flexible, and let your evidence guide you.
